Rich, meaty and solidly put together, Mercurey, secure in its position among the royalty of wines, brings out the best from beef rib steaks, or joints of beef or lamb, braised or in sauce.Roast pork is well suited to its rich aromas, as are poultry-based stews. Exotic dishes like-wise prove worthy partners for this wine. As for the cheeseboard, this wine harmonizes equally well with either mild, soft cheeses or aged versions.

This young wine is showing its wood aging strongly. Happily, the fruit is also very present, giving juicy, ripe cherry flavors and a soft texture with a dry core. The wine, from a walled clos once owned by the kings of France, will need to age. Drink from 2021.

The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy offers up an attractive bouquet of fried flowers and crunchy wild berries that's marked by 30% whole cluster vinification. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and succulent, but firm tannins clamp down on the somewhat drying finish.
